Welsh entrepreneur expands to Newport

30/09/04

Coffee#1 has opened a new outlet in Commercial Street, Newport, reinforcing the pledge of the chain’s owner, James Shapland, to open 20 new premises throughout South Wales and the South West within the next five years. This is the fifth in its chain so far and the first in Newport. A new shop in Abergavenny is also to be opened before Christmas.

Mr Shapland’s agent, Huw Thomas of Cooke & Arkwright said that the premises in Newport met with Mr Shapland’s preference for period buildings with character in prime locations. “Commercial Street is Newport’s busiest shopping street and the new premises are conveniently situated in the pedestrian area,” he said. “Following on from this acquisition and the other at 14 High Street, Abergavenny, we are now looking for further premises in Hereford, Bridgend, Swansea and Carmarthen.”

Mr Shapland said that initial reaction from customers in Newport has been very good. “Newport is currently undergoing significant change through the Newport Unlimited urban regeneration project and I am delighted that we have been able to establish an outlet at such a key time in the city’s development.”
