Wally’s double deli delight

02/06/09

Cardiff’s best loved deli, Wally’s Delicatessen has bucked the downward trend on the high street and doubled the size of its long established outlet in Royal Arcade, Cardiff.  The popular 60 year old store acquired the lease on adjoining premises of 2,170 sq ft, through agents Cooke & Arkwright in March and immediately began full refurbishment work alongside the existing deli.  The fully extended store will open on Monday, 8th June 2009.

Customers will be able to select from a mouthwatering range of over 3,000 product lines from around the world, including many new food ranges.  A three metre olive bar forms a central feature of the new store and an extended deli counter will display a wide selection of speciality cheeses.  Amongst the many new foodstuffs on offer will be loose, individual chocolates, teas and coffees, a range of freshly baked artisan breads and Italian Gelati, a healthy ice cream alternative made with milk rather than cream.

Steven Salamon, the owner of Wally’s and grandson of it’s founder, Polish immigrant Ignatz Salamon, said, “Demand for our foodstuffs has grown rapidly in recent years due to a combination of Eastern European immigration, the escalation of online sales through our website and customers becoming increasingly willing to explore new food concepts. The expansion has allowed us to bring in an even greater selection of gourmet fare as well as improve the shopping environment for our customers.”

Wally’s already has a long and enviable reputation for supplying everything from Polish meats and pickles, Hungarian salami, German hams, herbs, spices, pulses and health foods, to ginger bread, Greek wines and olives.  It has won an array of awards including the Observer Food Magazine’s ‘Best Deli in Wales’ and ‘Best Deli in Cardiff’ by BBC’s Olive magazine.

Alex Kalebic of Cooke & Arkwright, who acted on behalf of Wally’s in the deal said, “We were delighted to assist such a respected establishment as Wally’s in securing the premises.  They clearly needed the room for expansion and the preference was to stay in their current location, which is well known to regular customers and is one of Cardiff’s premium Victorian shopping arcades.”

As well as continental foods, Wally’s stocks staples from cuisines from China, India, Japan, Thailand, Mexico and the Caribbean.  Customers can be sure of expert advice as they negotiate ‘deli heaven’ - the highly experienced staff of ten have already been joined by one new assistant and it is anticipated that two more members will be recruited in the near future.
