Jobs have been recycled at Merthyr Tydfil following the closure of the Bairdswear factory at Cyfarthfa Industrial Estate. Green Waste Recycling has taken 52,487 square feet in Units 1 and 2 from Ashtenne Ltd, which was represented by Cooke & Arkwright in the deal. Currently employing 30 people, mostly from within the Merthyr Borough, Green Waste recycles in excess of 34,000 metric tons of industrial and consumer packaging wastes each year.
Materials such as expanded polystyrene, plastic bottles and cartons, polythene and expanded polypropylene are collected from all over the UK in compacted or bailed form and brought to the site in Cyfarthfa to be shredded and fed to vented extruders.
Managing Director Gerry Dallimore, said that the previous site at Blaenau Gwent had become too small and the business was relocated to the Merthyr Borough to satisfy its medium and long term objectives.
“This site has allowed us to grow and sustain our business development within the specialised area of plastic packaging recycling. We have invested £300,000 as a result of moving to our new location and plan a further investment of £500,000 over the next 18 months,” he said. The company anticipates that the investment will bring further job opportunities and hopes to employ at least 50 more staff within the next 12 to 18 months.
Green Waste is now to take recycling a step further, by manufacturing its own products from the recycled materials and consuming at least 20,000 metric tons of collected waste in the process.
“We are currently working closely with a number of large customers to this purpose and plan to put this into operation in the very near future,” said Mr Dallimore.
