Island life

12 July 2011

Sully Island has been put on the market for a guide price of £95,000, generating a huge amount of interest in the press and online media, as well as from prospective purchasers.  Comprising 5.95 hectares (14.69 acres), the island lies around 400 metres from the mainland, just outside Sully in the Vale of Glamorgan.

It is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is home to an abundance of species of birdlife and fauna, as well as being a highly regarded fishing spot.  Offering spectacular views up to the Severn Bridge in the east and towards the hills of Devon in the west, the island has been used over the centuries by Romans, Vikings, pirates and noblemen.  There is evidence of a burial mound and a Viking hill fort, as well as the skeleton of a wrecked vessel.  Before the First World War the son of the Marquis of Bute successfully cultivated a vineyard on the island to supply his father’s bottling plant in Castell Coch.

“I have valued and sold land across Wales and England, but this is the most unusual,” said Chris Hyde, Senior Surveyor in the Rural department.  “We have valued it at a realistic and attractive price, and have been receiving a high level of interest.” Tenders are invited by midday on Thursday 4th August 2011.
