National bakery retailer Greggs has embarked upon its pledged ‘accelerated’ expansion programme in 2010 by securing two new locations in Regent Trade Park and Avenue Retail Park in Cardiff. The new stores will create two dozen new jobs and start the drive to add 50 to 60 new premises to its estate this year.
Greggs is well known for its presence on the high street and is also making its mark in locations where customers work and travel, such as retail and industrial parks, and transport hubs such as airports and railway stations.
Alex Kalebic of Cooke & Arkwright, acting agent for Greggs’ acquisitions in South Wales said, “Regent Trade Park is a high profile, prominent development with good quality units fronting Ocean Way in the heart of Cardiff Bay. It is close to a range of leisure, office and trade counter users, with an average daily traffic flow of 20,000 vehicles. This is an ideal location where Greggs is currently under-represented. Its other location in Avenue Retail Park is also a prime site alongside Newport Road, the main arterial route through the east of the city and dominated by out of town retail.”
The shop at Regent Trade Park opened in March after being modified for use, while at Avenue Retail Park, a purpose built pod is being constructed by the developers and is expected to be ready in June. Russell Gower, retail operations manager at Greggs said, “The new locations complement our high street offerings without impinging on them. We are looking at a number of further locations throughout South Wales and remain positive about our opportunities for growth in this area”
Newly appointed Area Manager Lisa Stapleton, who was promoted to the role to assist in Greggs’ expansion plans, was responsible for the opening of the new shop, along with Jan Cooper who was previously Assistant Manager in St Mary Street, Cardiff.
“The store has got off to a great start and is growing on a weekly basis, which is excellent to see,” said Ms Stapleton. “All credit to Jan and her team!”
