Greggs continues core growth

13/05/04

Leading bakery retailer Greggs has opened a new outlet on Caroline Street in Cardiff. The property, which was acquired for Greggs by Cooke & Arkwright, is well placed to take advantage of the flourishing Brewery Quarter, the St David’s 2 development and the new central library which will be situated close by.

The new store will eventually replace Greggs’ nearby Hayes outlet, which closes in the summer to make way for St David’s 2. It was opened on St David’s Day by Ruth Maddock who was presented with a cheque for £6,000 on behalf of the Prince’s Trust, of which Gregg’s is a supporter.

Russell Gower, Sales Director of Greggs’ South Wales division, Treforest said, “We were keen to maintain a good presence in the city centre close to the Hayes. Caroline Street has been pedestrianised and is undergoing a transformation that marks it as a prime location and a key thoroughfare linking the Brewery Quarter and Mary Street to the Hayes.”

As well as expanding its high street offering, the bakery and takeaway specialist is also gaining a presence in industrial estates and high density residential areas. William Lloyd-Davies of Cooke & Arkwright, which acts for Greggs in its South Wales acquisitions, said, “We are looking for further properties in towns across South Wales as well as in a variety of other potential sites such as roadside developments, hospitals, universities, railway stations and petrol filling stations. “Greggs opened units in Newcastle International Airport and Wolverhampton General Hospital last year, while in South Wales it has obtained a presence on industrial estates such as Bridgend. We are looking to identify similar further opportunities.”
