A three-and-a-half acre site known as Holton Reach at Barry Waterfront, has been sold by joint agents Cooke & Arkwright and Chesterton on behalf of Associated British Ports and the Welsh Development Agency, to UK house builder Redrow.
Planning permission has been granted for a doctor’s surgery, a community centre incorporating a church, and 84 private houses and 29 affordable homes, at Holton Reach on Barry Waterfront. The Vale of Glamorgan Council resolved to approve the application subject to an S106 Agreement to secure provision of the affordable housing, public art contribution and public open space.
Land has also been allocated for a footbridge which will connect Waterfront Barry to Barry town centre. According to Redrow’s senior land manager Peter Thomas, “Waterfront Barry is an extremely successful regeneration project and we are delighted to contribute to it. The inclusion of a doctor’s surgery and community centre is very important to the total social makeup of the waterfront.”
Michael Lawley, managing director of Cooke & Arkwright, said that the deal has largely completed the North Quay area of the development. “We now have only one or two vacant sites left, such as Jackson’s Quay, a 1.3 acre plot overlooking the dock,” he said. “It has outline planning consent which includes the provision of affordable housing.”
Stephen Pritchard, Regional Property Manager, ABP South Wales, said that they were very pleased to secure a developer of the calibre of Redrow. “We look forward to working with Redrow to create a high quality scheme that will be of benefit to the community in and around the waterfront,” he said.
Waterfront Barry is a joint initiative between ABP and the WDA to transform the formerly disused Number One Dock into a vibrant mix of housing, retail, commercial and leisure facilities. Barry’s highly successful Annual Waterfront Festival involving music and street entertainment, farmers’ markets and stalls, and tall ships at the quay, was held on 4th and 5th September this year and attracted over 20,000 visitors. Wm Morrison’s opened a superstore at the Waterfront in October 2001 and has just completed construction of a 55,000 sq ft non-food retail park to be occupied by Focus DIY, Halfords and Argos and Kentucky Fried Chicken drive-thru restaurant.
