Although Selby had been ill for over 18 months the news of his death, even though expected following his rapid decline over recent months, was nevertheless a shock to us all.

Selby first joined us in 1990 on a temporary basis and so liked the surveyors’ life following earlier careers in the Army as an engineer and a computer specialist, that he decided to qualify as a surveyor.  He did his MSc at Reading University in 1990/91 and rejoined us later in 1991.  Since then he has been a fixture at Cooke & Arkwright.  His specialist skills with computing and dealing with large scale valuations enabled the business to develop a lot of capability which many of our competitors did not have and his lasting legacy will be our very clear understanding of the importance of technology and IT.

On a more human level Selby was a great personality around the office and a great source of advice to many of us, myself included over the years.  His wit and warm personality and his love of crosswords are the memories which we will have of him.  For those of us who have had to drive with him we will also remember his rally quality driving skills!  Already I have received tributes from a number of clients and they all talk of his knowledge, character and how pleasurable it was to work with him.

He will be greatly missed by us all.
